Angelou received her nickname from her older brother Bailey Jr., who couldn't pronounce her name so he called her Maya, which he derived from "my sister. The preface to the message stated that it was written by Angelou on her 70th birthday. In March 2003 a columnist in a Georgia newspaper printed material from a message that was already in wide circulation. It is not an ordinary wall sign, it is a real. By 2003 all four of these statements from different people had implausibly been reassigned to Maya Angelou. Her mother Vivian Baxter Johnson was a nurse.
